SENIOR SYSTEMS ENGINEER
POSITION SUMMARY:The primary function of the Senior Systems Engineer is to take high-level customer-driven product requirements and create detailed functional requirements and technical specifications for implementation by the engineering team. The Senior Systems Engineer serves as the primary technical lead for the engineering group, overseeing the technical direction of new systems and products.
The Senior Systems Engineer must be an excellent communicator with the ability to work with a diverse group of stakeholders including executives, customers, suppliers, and Niles’ engineers. He/she must have a passion for writing technical requirements, as this written documentation is an essential deliverable on an ongoing basis.
FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB
Essential Functions
- Analyzes customer and stakeholder needs and translates them into well-documented, achievable technical requirements, including block diagrams, use of modules, interface specifications, etc. Participates in obtaining customer needs.
- Effectively communicates with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Identifies, recommends and documents technology solutions with the potential for profitable business growth. Understands and communicates technology drivers that influence the product roadmap.
- Has expertise in design and integration of home entertainment and control products involving electronic/electrical, software and mechanical subsystems. Balanced expertise across all of these engineering disciplines is critical in support of the development of system-level architectures.
- Assesses technical risks and helps develop mitigation strategies.
- Provides conceptual designs, simulations, analyses, and prototypes in support of chosen technical solutions.
- Evaluates competitors and recommends technology development/implementation that will enable industry-leading products.
- Prepares high-level system integration and test plans and assists with development of detailed plans.
- Identifies technology gaps in current capabilities and processes.
- Serves as a primary technical resource in formal and informal design reviews.
POSITION QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
Education:
- BS, and/or MS in Electronics Engineering, Computer Science or a similar, relevant discipline.
- Completion of coursework focused on Systems Engineering is desired.
Experience:
- Minimum 3 years experience in home entertainment/control industry.
- Minimum 3 years experience as a Systems Engineer.
- Minimum 10 years hardware/software engineering experience.
- Experience working directly with customers to gather requirements.
- Experience designing modular systems.
- Extensive experience documenting technical project requirements, including user interface requirements.
Short Term Initiatives:
- Assist with next-generation system architecture development.
- Define engineering requirements for next-generation systems.
- Contribute to the technology roadmap for the entire product line.
Skills & Requirements:
- Ability to analytically evaluate customer needs, available technology, and existing products to define/develop new industry-leading products/systems.
- Understands key technologies including: IR capture, storage and issuance; RF communications including ZigBee, Z-Wave and WiFi; UPnP; DLNA; TCP/IP; Ethernet; CobraNet; analog and digital audio & video with emphasis on emerging technologies.
- Experience integrating A/V systems with sub-systems such as internet, lighting, HVAC, and security.
- Ability to effectively communicate in writing and verbally to various customers/audiences.
- Detailed understanding of current and future technology trends.
- Excellent problem solving and critical thinking skills.
- Must be proficient with computers, Microsoft Office applications and Lotus Notes.
- Good presentation and organizational skills.
- Excellent work ethic, business ethics, and high quality standards.
- A true passion for the audio/video industry and the unique challenges it presents.
